This is a working preview. Class tags are automatic in the app. The style, use and tone tags shown here are the kind you add yourself.

Automatic tagging

Fonts tag themselves.

A 19 KB model on your Mac reads the letterforms, and simple rules read the name and file details. Each family lands in Serif, Sans Serif, Handwritten or Script. No account, no subscription, no upload.

Indexes in place

Your folder stays yours.

Typeist reads fonts where they already are. It never copies or moves the fonts it indexes, and it watches the folder, so new fonts are found and tagged on their own.

9,477fonts in about 4 seconds

Measured on one Mac, on a library of 9,477 font files. Typeist reads them where they are.

Filters that combine

Filters that combine.

Choose two classes and the search widens: Serif or Script. Add a tone from another group and it narrows: Serif or Script, and Sophisticated. Counts update as you click.

Tags you own

Your edits always win.

Add or remove a tag by hand and it sticks. Automatic tagging runs again whenever you add fonts, and it never overwrites your edit. Tag a whole selection at once, and export every tag to JSON.

Hover or focus a tag to see what it means.

Activation

Switch fonts on and off.

Turn a family on and other apps can use it, still on after a restart. Choose Turn On Until Quit for a one-off job. Select fonts and press Space to switch them.

And the details

Built for big libraries.

Small tools that keep a big font library tidy, safe and easy to move around in.

  • Collections

Group fonts by project. Drag fonts onto a collection to add them. Deleting a collection never touches the font files themselves.

  • Drag-and-drop import

Drop font files or folders on the window. They are filed into folders by foundry and family, nothing is overwritten, and exact duplicates are skipped.

  • Repairs broken fonts

Typeist fixes one common kind of damaged font header in a cached copy of the file, so the original on your disk is never touched.

  • Problems list

Files that cannot be read are collected in a Problems list, so you can see exactly which ones need attention instead of guessing.

Themes

Pick your own accent.

Typeist has 13 presets plus its default blue, or any color from the system picker. Light, dark or system, and every theme keeps text at AA contrast. Try one here and the rest of this page follows.

Privacy first

Your library stays local.

Tagging runs on your Mac, and crash logs are written to a folder there and never uploaded. The only exceptions are update checks, which you can turn off, and the optional Vision Tags feature, which stays off until you add your own API key.

Compared

The basics, plus tagging.

Typeist covers the everyday work of a font manager and adds one thing on top: every font gets a class the moment it arrives.
